Three EcoBoost engines will be available with the new Escape: the 1.6L (SEL), the 2.0L (Titanium) and the 2.5L (S). All three will keep fuel consumption under 6.9L/100km, the SEL topping the charts at 6.0, in Transport Canada-approved numbers.

This will make the Escape the most fuel-efficient small SUV on the market. Better still, it will best even the hybrid version.

"We've come a long way in fuel consumption terms, which proves Ford's abilities to develop small, yet powerful engines," Nair added. Never before has the 178-horsepower and 194 ft-lbs of torque 1.6L EcoBoost been offered in North America.

It produces 20 horsepower and 30 ft-lbs more than than the Mazda CX-5. Ford believes before 2013, 90% of its fleet will be offered with an EcoBoost power-plant.
